Why is Malaysia going to space?

malaysian astronautWe just published that food prices in Malaysia went up 50% in 3 months and then I hear this on the radio:

Malaysia is grooming a second astronaut and will be setting up a commission if this is money well spend.

My first idea was: If you plan to grow durians in space, then it is money well spend , as there is well… lots of space… and it’s all free…, you just need to figure out how to water them and save them from the burning sunlight. But as usual, nobody laughs with my kind of jokes. So let’s be serious about this.

Malaysia doesn’t have any space technology, so why use the country’s hard earned money on grooming a space traveler when oil prices and an ever growing world population are making it quite impossible for some to buy their daily dose of rice?

malaysia taxiYes, I have seen so many proud Malaysians in the streets of Malaysia that they had an astronaut in space. Back home in Europe, people were asking me:
- Amazing, you mean Malaysia has its own rocket?
- No, he was on a Russian mission.
- Don’t you know that astronauts are the ones groomed by Nasa, cosmonauts are their Russian counterparts, and if you travel with the Russians, you are a traveler.

So for them it’s kind of an expensive taxi ride in space …
